School Description

Denver Venture School (DVS) is public charter school opening in the fall of 2008 with a class of 120 freshmen. Eventually serving approximately 400 students in grades 9 through 12, DVS will offer a small school environment dedicated to academic excellence.

  • Students follow a rigorous liberal-arts academic program that will prepare them for four-year colleges and universities
  • A project-based learning environment, based on the Expeditionary Learning model, gives students the chance to engage in hands-on studies in areas of interest to them
  • Through the experience of starting and running a real business, students will develop the essential qualities of entrepreneurs including independence, self-confidence, a strong work ethic, and a passion for success

As an Expeditionary Learning model, DVS emphasizes high achievement through active learning, character growth, and teamwork. The five Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound core practices—learning expeditions, active pedagogy, school culture and character, leadership and school improvement, and structures—work in concert and support one another to promote high achievement. Director of Development


Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing and implementing short and long term fundraising strategies to raise $500,000 annually
  • Work with Executive Board and Advisory Board to create a strong list of fundraising prospects
  • Primary liaison to the Executive Board on development issues
  • Primary liaison to the DVS Advisory Board.  This includes all communication with the Advisory Board, meeting preparation, meeting notes, fundraising strategies
  •   Oversee all correspondence with and recognition of prospects and donors, including thank you notes, emails, e-blasts, newsletters, etc.
  • Oversee all database management
  • Coordinate all meetings with between DVS Head of School, Executive Board Members, Advisory Board members and individual and corporate donors
  • Develop and cultivate long term relationships with individual, corporate, and foundation prospects and donors
  • Identify and apply for all appropriate and available grants
  • Assist the Head of School with public relations and community outreach in order to develop ongoing partnerships with business and community leaders in order to effectively market the school
  • Organize all fundraising and community related events
  • Organize and launch a capital campaign, as appropriate

Personal Experience and Qualities:

  • Experience as a fundraiser with a proven record of success; preferably in the non-profit sector
  • Strong belief in the vision and mission of Denver Venture School
  • Passion for being part of a start-up and getting the name of Denver Venture School out to the community
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to see the big picture fundraising needs and develop a systematic plan that supports the big picture
  • Goal-oriented and results-driven
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to form productive relationships with a variety of stakeholders
  • Energetic and enthusiastic
  • Ability to work flexible hours
